Situation in 2001
1. Number of people living in poverty: 163.200
2. 36.7% of the population;
       a)  25% in urban areas;
       b)  20% in rural areas;

3.   Depth of poverty 13,3%
       a) 7.9% in urban areas;
       a)  20% in rural areas;

4. Intensity of poverty 6,5%;
       a)  3.6% in urban areas;
       b)  10.20% in the rural areas;

Situation in 2007
1.  It declined to 130.900;      -32.300 people
2.  Level declined to 26,6%;         -10.1%
       a) 13.2% in urban areas;      -11.8%
       b) 44.30% in rural areas;      -6.8%

3. Depth of poverty reduced to 8.1%   -5.2%
       a)  3.3% in urban areas;                -4.6%                   
       b)  14.3% in rural areas;                -5.7%

4. It declined to 3.4%   -3.1%
       a)    1.3%  in urban areas;    -2.3%  
       b)    6.3%   in rural areas;     -3.9% 

    In 2002 the Government determined about the country strategy: "It must combine the economic and social development in a more explicit way, in order to fight poverty and to prevent the aggravation of social inequality, allowing for a sustainable economic and social development of the islands.” Here are the results!
