Plans are underway for the Sixth Annual Dinner commemorating the birth date of the late Padre Pio Olivo Giovanni Gottin, O.F.M., an Italian priest who served 50 years as a priest in the Cabo Verde Islands and among Cabo-verdians in most of the communities aforementioned.

The event that is also a main fundraiser for the organization will take place at Lantana in Randolph, MA on Saturday, March 11, 2006.
Entertainment will be provided by Cabo Sound, with special performances by well-known Cabo-verdian artists including Saozinha Fonseca Fragoso, Fefe Lopes, Luchinha, Armando dePina and Ze Rui.

Setting the style and pace of the day, Officers and members will attend mass in memory of Padre Pio at 4:00 PM at Saint Edith Stein Church; 21 East Main Street; Brockton, MA and invite others to join them, regardless if you will attend the event or not.

Padre Pio Charities, Inc. is one of the most successful Cabo-verdian non-profit organizations in the New England area that focus its missions on the work and solidarity of the late Padre Pio who served the Cabo-verdian community with love, pride and enthusiasm.

padre pio
Built in the image of "Nho Padre Pio", the foundation, since its creation in February 2000, has provided aid to the disadvantaged people of Cabo Verde and United States of America. In 2001, through the catholic church of Porto Novo, S. Antao, the organization donated 5,000 dollars to support poor families affected by the drought in that county. In 2003 - 2005, Padre Pio Charities offered scholarship to five students in the USA, each worth $1,000. Various food items, clothes and school supplies have been shipped to Brava, S. Antao and Fogo to support disadvantaged families. During the disappearance of a fishing boat from the village of Sao Pedro in S. Vicente, the organization also responded with a financial support to the affected families.
Nho Padre PioGottin (1924 - 1999) as he was widely known, arrived in Cabo Verde Islands in 1948, at the age of 24. His missionary career in the arquipelago begun as a priest at the parish of S. Lourenco, Fogo where he stayed for only 6 months before departing to the island of Brava.

In the island of flowers, where in a short period of time, he attracted enormous affection, Padre Pio became one of the most popular figures and a true Bravense by displaying leadership and acts of solidarity never seen before in the tiny island of Brava. Noted by many people of the most remote island of Cabo Verde, Nho Padre Pio was an intellectual but one could never tell because of his simplicity, approachable manners and caring for the people he served.

In Brava, no other figure ever came close to the acceptance level of Padre Pio, be it in social or popularity of this lamented, wise and religious leader who commended a perfect criolo of Djabraba and remembered and called everyone by his or her first name.

Unfortunately, his altruistic spirit and shining image as servant of the people didn't spare Nho Padre Pio from being victim of certain excesses that occurred in parts of Cabo Verde Islands during the early stages of liberty and independence. Because of the events of that time, the priest who had arrived in the island of poet Eugenio Tavares in 1949 and made history as an authentic champion of solidarity was forced to abandon the island and the arquipelago in order to return to safer grounds of his native land  Italy.

Padre Pio new land and missionary work placed him in the heart of the Cabo-verdian community in the United States of America where he arrived in 1977 and lived until his death on November 7th, 1999. He fell victim of a severe heart attack while conducting a meeting in Brockton, MA and died in the hands of many friends and people he had mentored into adulthood, one of them being Moises Rodrigues, Director of Community Affairs in Brockton, MA.

Padre Pio Charities is one of the few permanent reminders of his unforgettable good deeds and love for the poor and an organization that is worthy of support.

"We believe in the the work of Padre Pio Charities and we appeal to the entire Cabo-verdian community to do the same for the good of those less fortunate and to keep the memory of Padre Pio alive," affirmed the board
